SIUE a Good Early Season Effort for Griffins Cross Country
Edwardsville, Ill. – The cross country teams competed at the SIUE Cross Country Challenge on Friday evening.
Junior Olivia Beggs finished 12th on the hilly 5K course in a time of 20:49. Freshman Cathy Maschmeyer finished 16th in a time of 21:54, close to her personal best for 5K. Junior Claire Becker earned runner-of-the-meet honors for pursuing adversity and making her comeback to racing after an ankle injury sidelined her for most of her junior track and cross country season.
"The front end of the race went out in well under six minute pace through the first mile, and all three women went out too fast in the small field," said Coach Blake. "All in all they hung on pretty well but we will see improvement from a more evenly paced raced."
Senior Justin Horneker was under the weather but got through his first 8K of the season.
The Griffin's next race is hosted by Rhodes College on September 27th.
