Griffins tabbed for third in SLIAC Coaches Preseason Poll
St. Louis, Mo. - Fontbonne University men's basketball has been picked to finish regular-season conference play in third place according to the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's Preseason Coaches Poll, annouced today. Webster and Spalding both received four first-place votes with Webster holding a one-point edge on the Golden Eagles. Fontbonne received one first-place vote and finished with 64 points in third place with MacMurray on their heals totaling 63 points.
Last season the Griffins advanced to the SLIAC Championship game, their first SLIAC bid since 2009. The Griffins look to new head coach Lance Thornhill and top-scorer Jared Greenlee for another tournament appearance. The senior forward earned Second-Team All-Conference honors last season and led the team in 12.7 points and 7.3 rebounds per game. Greenlee was also picked earlier this month on the DIII News Watch List. Other big returners include forward Ben Kissing and senior guard Richard Dorhauer. Kissing averaged 8.2 ppg as Dorhauer averaged 6.3 ppg.
In total, Fontbonne returns about 10 players from the last couple of years and will have 11 newcomers fighting for playing time. Transfers Trey Watkins and Jeff Smith will try and add some immediate depth to the squad while freshman guard Kris McCann and center Bryce Zimmerman will try and make immediate marks as well.
