Game 2
Greenville, Ill. - Fontbonne University softball's winning tradition within the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference has taken a turn this season. Today's doubleheader sweep by Greenville College, puts the Griffins 9-5 in conference on the year. Those five conference losses are the most for the program dating back to 2008 when Fontbonne went 6-8 in SLIAC play.
Fontbonne has won the last six regular season SLIAC Championships, which is still technically statistically possible to achieve. Westminster has four games left on the season and sit on top the leaderboard with a 12-2 conference record. Fontbonne also has four games left and swept the Blue Jays, but the Griffins would need Westminster, who faces Blackburn and Greenville, to lose all four games and Fontbonne would need to sweep Eureka and Iowa Wesleyan for that to happen.
Greenville can also claim the regular season title. The Panthers sit 10-2 on the year and still have to face Principia, Eureka and Westminster.
Fontbonne's doubleheader at Eureka College tomorrow afternoon, which has been moved up an hour and begins at noon, is critical in keeping the Griffins' tradition alive. Fontbonne, who hosts the SLIAC tournament this year, needs to win in order to keep hopes of making the conference tournament alive. The last time the Griffins missed the tournament was 2008.
