ST. LOUIS, Mo.—The Fontbonne University baseball team tied the game in the bottom of the seventh against No. 25 Webster, however, the Gorloks scored two in the ninth to win game one of the series, 7-5.
Fontbonne (13-12; 5-3 SLIAC), totaled 10 hits and they were led by Matt Tossick as he extended his hitting streak out to six and belted his second homer on the season.
Michael Golich reached base twice more today and has now reached safely in his last 16 games, while extending his hitting streak out to six as well. Jackson Penrod also added two hits and tied Ryan Schocker with one RBI.
On the bump, Luke Summers pitched well in his no-decision outing after going 6.1 innings, allowing five runs and striking out five. Out of the pen, Brett Lange dropped his first on the season allowing two runs (zero earned) and sitting down one.
Webster (17-7; 7-2 SLIAC), saw Kyler Kent hit a solo homer and got a 2-for-4 two RBI performance out of Ben Swords. On the mound, starter Matt Mulhearn got out of quite a few jams in his 6.2 innings of work. Reliever Shane Donovan stayed a perfect 5-0 on the season after going 2.1 innings and striking out one.
In the first, Mike Wick led off with a single and moved up to third on Nate Throll's double. After a strikeout and a fly-out, Swords came through with a single to right and that plated the duo for the 2-0 lead.
In the bottom half of the inning, though the Griffins answered. Golich and Gus Purschke got things started with consecutive singles. After a double-play, Penrod brought Golich home with a single to left and now it was a 2-1 game.
In the fourth, Kent led off and hit a solo shot over the center field wall to make it 3-1. In the bottom half again, the Griffins had a big response.
Michael Puckett, Jr., reached base on a hit-by-pitch and moved on over to third on Braeden Dobbs' single to center. Two batters later, Tossick sent Mulhearn's offering over the left field wall, putting Fontbonne ahead 4-3.
That score remained the same up until the top of the seventh. The Gorloks got an RBI single off the bat of Wardlaw and an RBI sacrifice-fly from Wick to give them the 5-4 lead.
In the next half inning, the Griffins got a one-out single from Golich and he went on to steal second. Two batters later, Schocker came through with a bloop single to right, allowing Golich to score easily to tie the game.
In the ninth, however, Joe Swanson hit a one-out double. After a walk, pinch-runner Adam Lovell stole third. On the attempt to get Lovell at third, the ball went wide and into the outfield. The Griffins committed another error on that same play and Matt Staker scored all the way from first.
Those runs proved to be enough as Donovan set the Griffins down in order for the two-run victory.
The two teams will be back at it tomorrow afternoon at Shaw Park. First-pitch at 12 p.m.
