Memphis, Tenn. - Fontbonne men's soccer's season opener was a hot one against the University of the Ozarks, both with the heat index and physicality of play. This season the Griffins will be a threat using their size to get the ball up the field.
Both goalies saw little action in the first half as Ozarks held only a 2-0 shot advantage over Fontbonne. Second-half play was a tough back-and-forth battle. Ozarks scored first in the 78th minute. The Griffins held their composure and rebounded back as Ryan Curran scored Fontbonne's first goal of 2015 just 26 seconds later. Curran was assisted by Steve Pfeifer.
As the 82nd minute of play was beginning, Ozarks was awarded a penalty kick on a Fontbonne foul in the box. All Fontbonne defenders tried to argue with the center referee, resulting in multiple yellow cards. Miscommunication between the officials and Griffin goalkeeper Jordan Alberici allowed Ozarks to score the winning goal before Alberici was ready.
Fontbonne will try and rebound tomorrow when they take on Austin College at 2pm.
