St. Louis, Mo. - The outcome wasn't as hoped at Centene Stadium tonight as first-year head coach Ricky Andrews and the Griffins took the field for the first time at home.
A close first half with Illinois College edging Fontbonne in shots (6-5), the halftime score remained 0-0. The Griffins put more pressure on the Blueboys with a 10-4 second-half shot advantage as well as achieving six corner kicks to Illinois College's 1. Despite the pressure, the Blueboys scored in the 49th minute when Fontbonne goalkeeper Jordan Alberici came out near the 20 yd line and lunged for the ball, missing. Blueboy Joe Tooley took advantage of the open net, lobbing the only goal of the match over defender Devin Arand's head who went for the defensive save.
The win marks the first win for Illinois College men's soccer against Fontbonne.
The Griffins have four more straight home games with their next contests against Birmingham Southern Saturday at 10am and Lake Forest on Sunday at noon.
