St. Louis, Mo. - After giving up a goal in the second minute of play, the Griffins gave up a similar goal in the 71st as they trailed 0-2 to Webster University with under 20 minutes to play. Sophomore Alex Lamoreaux got Fontbonne on the board just two minutes after Webster's second goal. He tied the game 10 minutes later when senior Nathan Spiess sent a cross down the baseline that floated through Webster's goalkeeper's hand, where Lamoreaux was waiting in the middle of the box for the put-in.
Right before Lamoreaux's second goal, junior Alex Smith had a good look on a header from a Fontbonne corner kick. Smith's header was too far to the goalkeeper's left, but a Gorlok defender was in the right position to save the goal and head the ball out.
With 39 seconds remaining in the first overtime, Webster thought they scored the game-winner and were even celebrating on the field while the officials were collaborating as the linesman recalled the goal on an offsides call. The shot was first saved by Fontbonne keeper Jordan Alberici followed by a scrum right in front of the goalline and the offsides call.
Fontbonne had a good look after Spiess chased down a long ball on the right side and sent the cross to Matt Key. Key's shot went just wide right, keeping the game tied. Webster scored the game-winning double-overtime goal with 11 seconds left. The ball was crossed from the right side of the box to the middle for the golden goal.
Alberici made a big save in the 31st minute and totaled nine saves. The Griffins fall to 3-8 on the year and 1-2 in conference.
Fontbonne travels to Greenville this Saturday, October 10th for a 1pm contest.
