Dudley scores game-winner as Alberici records shutout
St. Louis, Mo. - Fontbonne men's soccer walked away with a 1-0 shutout win over Blackburn College tonight, despite a 20-8 shot advantage and 9 corner kick opportunities. The Griffins are now 4-9 on the year and move closer to a .500 conference record (2-3).
Fontbonne fans were almost on their feet cheering in the 21st minute before a would-be goal was taken away on a defensive save by Blackburn. Nathan Spiess kicked the corner kick right to Devin Arand in the middle of the box who jumped up for the header. Arand's header was a rocket to the right post but was headed away be a defensive Beaver, much to the dismay of Griffin fans.
After a scoreless first half, Blackburn got their best look in the 60th minute. The ball and offensive player were sprinting in the field near the top of the box with Fontbonne's defense trying to close in. What looked like was going to be a goal for Blackburn turned into a Fontbonne save by Jordan Alberici to eliminate the goal. Blackburn settled for the un-productive corner kick.
Freshman Matt Rapisardo sailed the ball in from the far sideline to sophomore Ryan Dudley in the middle of the box. Dudley scored the game-winner as he sent the ball to the left side of the goal in the 72nd minute.
The shutout is the second for Alberici who picked up his third win as he saved three on the night.
Fontbonne is at home again this weekend when they host Spalding at 1pm on Saturday and Finlandia at 1pm on Sunday.
