Women shatter Distance Medley Relay Record
Monmouth, IL – The Griffin women took to the track at the Fighting Scot Invitational on Saturday with a school record on their mind. In a distance medley relay of men's and women's teams combined, they managed to shatter the previous record by 20 seconds, posting a time of 13:50. 5K/10K runner Olivia Beggs stepped down in distance to run the opening 1200 leg, coming through in 4:25. Freshmen Becca Buehler split 64.0 on the 400m leg, dropping a second and half from her open 400m time from last week. Jessica Brock ran the 800 in 2:47 to hand off to Alyssa Tonner on anchor. Tonner ran 5:33 for the 1600, equaling her time from her open mile two weeks ago. Tonner caught Truman's anchor leg with 300m to go, which made for a thrilling stride-for-stride last lap. Truman, the only other women's team in the race, pulled away over the last 50m to run a time of 13:48.
On the men's side freshmen Doan Trieu ran the 60m and 200m, marking the first and second time the once-pole vaulter has ever run those particular events.
The meet also marked the first competition for new sprints coach Myreon Sartin, who recently joined the team after moving from Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Coach Sartin competed for Southern Mississippi University and coached multiple events at state champion Tylertown High School.
