Griffins extend win streak to four games

St. Louis, Mo. - The Fontbonne University women's soccer team won their fourth game in a row and stay unbeaten in conference by defeating MacMurray College 5-0 on Saturday. The Griffins improved to 6-4-1 overall and 2-0 in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) play.
Sophomore Linsey Klein opened the scoring for the Griffins in the 27th minute when she tapped home a rebound from senior Heather Wiegmann's shot. It was Klein's third goal of the season. Just six minutes later sophomore Leann Smith doubled the Griffins' margin by blasting home her third goal of the season. Right before halftime, Fontbonne extended its lead again as freshman Casey Linsenbardt scored her first career collegiate goal. Freshman defender Katie Sportsman assisted Linsenbardt's goal recording her first career collegiate assist.
After halftime, junior Meredith Wendt recorded her team-high sixth goal of the season on a corner kick from sophomore Daniele Caruso. Linsenbardt finished off the scoring in the 81st minute scoring off a pass from senior Natalie Sipole. It was Sipole's team-high fourth assist on the season.
Senior Tayler Pulvirenti played all 90 minutes in posting her fourth shutout of the season. She made two saves in the game. For the game, Fontbonne held a 35-3 advantage in shots and a 13-0 edge in corner kicks over the Highlander.
The Griffins, who have won five of their last six games, return to the pitch Tuesday night as they host nationally ranked Washington University at 6 p.m.
