Griffins sweep MacMurray in true team fashion
St. Louis, Mo. - In front of a packed house, Fontbonne women's volleyball snapped a two-game losing streak and defeated MacMurray College 25-20, 25-16 and 25-11 for their first St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory of the season. The Griffins are now 3-4 and have a week off before hosting Principia College at 7 p.m. on September 20th.
After a close first-set, the Griffins exploded to an 11-0 lead. Senior setter Lynsey Wehrenberg served three aces on 12 attempts. She finished the night with 13 assists and five aces. Fontbonne then started the third set with a 12-2 win margin and never looked back.
Fellow senior Alli Brown was highly effective at the net for the Griffins with six kills on nine attempts for a game-high .667 average. The middle blocker also had three block assists.
Leading Fontbonne in blocks was another senior in Holly Richter. She tallied three assists and one solo block. Defensively, senior Mariana Rogers notched a team-high eight digs.
MacMurray remains winless on the year. Megan Gillis led the team with 12 digs.
Before the game, Fontbonne fans recognized Kersten McDonough on her 1,000th career kill, which seemed to aid in her hitting efforts. The senior tallied 12 kills with an almost career-high .458 hitting percentage.
