Senior Emmie Haring is new career assists leader
St. Louis, Mo. - Fontbonne University senior Emmie Haring (Ballwin, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) was understandably frustrated at the beginning of the Griffins final home game of 2016. The point guard needed seven assists to tie the all-time assist record at Fontbonne, set back in 2001 by Melissa Steward and averaged 6.1 assists per game headed into the contest against Robert Morris University of Springfield.
Fontbonne's shooting seemed dismal in the first two periods each time Haring would try to inch closer to the record. When that didn't work she turned to scoring. Haring went four-for-four in the second quarter including both three-point attempts. In the first half she led the team with 15 points, missing just three field goals on nine attempts, but only managed to connect on one of the Griffins' 12 assists.
Haring recorded four assists in the third quarter and needed just three more to break the record, which she achieved after a Griffin timeout with 5:28 left in the game. All three assists were recorded in a row in a span of two and a half minutes. She now owns the all-time career assists record with 438 assists and counting. Haring owns the top two records for assists in a season with 149 assists her sophomore season and 145 assists last year. She currently leads the SLIAC with 57 assists on the season.
In the win, Haring notched a season-high 22 points on a career-high four treys while recording six steals and eight assists. She finished the night 7-of-12 overall and 4-of-7 from long range while sinking all four free throw attempts.
Fontbonne defeated the Eagles 93-33 and as a team tied the record for most field goals made in a game (38). The game recap can be found here.
The Griffins will honor Haring in a pre-game ceremony before their January 7th home game at 1 p.m.
