St. Louis, Mo. -Fontbonne University women's soccer went back to the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament Championship for the first time in 20 years. In 1996, the Griffins were victorious. Tonight they fell to No. 1-seeded Webster University 2-1.
Senior Tayler Pulvirenti thwarted Webster's first corner kick and less than a minute later Fontbonne took a 1-0 lead.
Junior Maddie Tague left-footed a pass bear midfield between two Gorlok defenders that sophomore Ellen Weaver was able to run down and put into the left side of the goal. Fontbonne's lone goal came in the third minute as Weaver finished the year with a career-high nine goals.
Webster possessed the ball much of the rest of the half and tied the game with just over a minute left in the first half.
In the second half, the SLIAC Defensive Player of the Year, Webster senior Kelli Cardine, could be found heading the ball pretty much anytime the ball was lofted into the midfield, eliminating Fontbonne's offensive chances in the second half.
The Gorloks scored the game winning goal in the 61st minute and will make their 12th trip to the NCAA Tournament.
Pulvirenti saved six in the loss and ended the season with a career-high 69 saves. She has 184 saves in her three-year career. She finalizes her career shutout record to 21 shutouts.
Webster outshot Fontbonne 15-3 and achieved a 7-0 corner kick advantage.
After the game, the SLIAC announced All-Conference, All-Tournament and individual accolades. Fontbonne's release on Griffin recipients can be found here.
Fontbonne's season ended with a 12-7-2 overall record. The Griffins lose Savannah Davis, Natalie Sipole, Pulvirenti and Heather Wiegmann to graduation.
