ST. LOUIS, Mo.—The St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) released the 2017 Women's Volleyball Coaches Poll today and the Griffins are picked to finish in sixth with 38 points.
The reigning back-to-back SLIAC Tournament Champions, Greenville College, hold the top spot with 77 points. Westminster earned the No. 2 seed with 70 points, while Webster and Spalding come in at third and fourth respectively.
The Griffins finished the 2016 campaign 13-16 overall and 8-10 in conference play, but the team did close out its season winners five out of its last six games.
The team saw three of its own, Kersten McDonough (First Team), Mariana Rogers (Third Team) and Lynsey Wehrenberg (3rd Team) collect All-Conference Honors.
McDonough led them on the offensive side of the net with 432 kills and a hitting percentage of .376. She closed out her career the all-time leader in attacks (3,982) and kills (1,388). She's a three year First Team All-SLIAC selectee and was named the SLIAC Offensive Player of the Week this past season.
Rogers, a Munster, Indianapolis, native, was named to the All-Conference Team for the first time in her career after she led the Griffins defensively with 506 digs, 322 of which came against SLIAC opponents.
Wehrenberg, meanwhile, became just the second Griffin to total over 2,000 assists and 1,000 digs in the history of the program. In 2016, the now departed senior set new career-high marks in assists (678), digs (349) and service aces (35).
This year, the team brings in plenty of fresh faces in hopes of replacing McDonough, Rogers and Wehrenberg. Coach Heater, however, will return the likes of Kristina Eason and Megan McKenzie to name a few.
Eason had herself a year with 267 kills and a hitting percentage of .188 which ranked her inside the Top 16 in the SLIAC. McKenzie, a Kansas City, Missouri, native, finished third behind Eason with 192 kills and came up with 51 blocks which was fourth best.
Sophomore Emma Seiz will be another player to look out for as she'll look to build off her 67 kills and 60 blocks.
