ST. LOUIS, Mo.—Vice President of Athletics Maria Buckel is pleased to announce the removal of the interim tag and name Ashley Johnson Head Cheerleading and STUNT Coach.
"I'm excited to remove the interim tag for Coach Johnson," said Buckel. "She had proven herself as an assistant coach but her work last year as acting head coach she proved she was the right person to lead the cheerleading and STUNT programs at Fontbonne. Her team had a solid performance at Nationals, and I'm excited to see the progress of cheerleading under her leadership. She's poised to build a strong foundation for Fontbonne STUNT, and I know they will excel."
Coach Johnson guided the cheer team to its first Nationals appearance in program history in April where they finished in sixth place.
"I'm honored to step into this role for these two teams," said Johnson. "I've had the privilege of being part of building these teams over the last two years and I could not be more excited to see where the coming seasons take us."
She added, "I'd like to thank Maria Buckel and Danielle Doerfler for this opportunity and for providing a supportive athletic community for us. I'd also like to thank my team for their constant support and dedication to the growth of our program. GRIFFIN SPIRT!"
Prior to Fontbonne, Johnson has coached tumbling and competitive gymnastics for nearly 10 years in her hometown of Des Moines, Iowa. She began her cheer career at Indian Hills Community College where she received her Associate of Arts degree.
After Indian Hills, Johnson transferred to Lindenwood University where she competed on the co-ed team and Lindenwood's inaugural STUNT team in Belleville.
Johnson received her Bachelor Arts degree in Business Administration in 2020 from Lindenwood. This year, she earned her MBA here at Fontbonne.
