Baseball defeats Washington U. 12-10
St. Louis- Fontbonne University baseball opened their season defeating the Washington University Bears 12-10 at GCS Ballpark in Sauget, Ill.
With temperatures in the low 20s and upper teens, Griffin Rob Berger led with a leadoff walk, followed by a single by Ethan Boyer and two throwing errors on the Bears, resulting in Fontbonne scoring from the first two batters. A Fontbonne double and single, followed by two Washington U. strikeouts would result in two more Griffin runs before the bottom of the first inning was over.
Three singles and two triples in the bottom of the first gave Washinton U. a 4-3 lead. With three stolen bases, three singles and a double, the Bears scored three more runs in the second to lead 7-3.
After a scoreless third inning, Fontbonne put three more runs on the board to pull within one in the fourth, but the Bears stole another base and eventually scored another run to lead by two.
A big fifth inning for the Griffins resulted in five runs. Tanner Carter led with a double and advanced to third on the following groundout. Two batters were hit by pitches, resulting in runners at second and third. A defensive error and sacrifice fly resulted in two runs for Fontbonne. Two more singles gave the Griffins two more runs on the scoreboard, leading 11-8.
Washington U. put one on the scoreboard in the fifth and sixth innings, cutting their deficit to one. Fontbonne mustered another run in the top of the ninth for the final run of the game.
Fontbonne totaled 17 hits with Washington U. close behind with 16. The Griffins ended the game with three more strikeouts while the Bears totaled seven stolen bases.Cale Laughline recorded the win with Carter receiving the save.
Fontbonne's games against Dubuque and Elmhurst have been canceled due to weather and field conditions. The Griffins are set to host Carthage and Benedictine on March 8th and 9th.
