Baseball splits Sunday games against Carthage
St. Louis- Fontbonne University baseball was able to take on Carthage College on Sunday, despite poor field conditions. The Griffins were able to host the Wisconsin powerhouse at Seckman high school in Imperial, Mo.
Game 1
In the first game, Carthage stayed on top after taking the lead in the second inning. Alex Roedner did his part for the Griffins, doubling in the first and tripling in the ninth. Roedner brought in the first Griffin run (Ethan Boyer) and scored himself on a Nick Platipodis single. The two runs were too little too late as Carthage won 4-2.
Tanner Carter took the loss for Fontbonne, giving up four runs on seven hits in six innings. Carter managed to strike out two Red Men before coming off the mound. Cale Laughlin struck out four in his three innings of work, trying to mount a Griffin comeback.
Game 2
Carthage got on the board in the first with Fontbonne replying with a run in the third and Carthage taking a 2-1 lead in the sixth. Fontbonne took advantage of a Red Men pitching change and right field error in the eighth, scoring three runs for a 4-2 win.
Jacob Becker pitched a complete nine innings, allowing only one earned run, four hits and one walk while striking out five batters.
Jake Jewell was charged with the loss, subbing in the eighth inning, walking Zach Carel and allowing Alex Hill to knock off a two-run single with Matt Wallis contributing a run with a sacrifice fly.

The Griffins travel to Illinois College on Thursday, March 13 with the first pitch slated for 2pm. Fontbonne then travels to Florida for five games over spring break before hosting Monmouth College on Sunday, March 23rd.
