Baseball Season Ends; Freund to SLIAC All-Tournament Team
Highland, Ill.- Fontbonne baseball was out for revenge on the No. 1 Webster University Gorloks to open the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament after Webster swept Fontbonne 3-0 the previous weekend.
The Gorloks took a 6-0 lead after four innings. Fontbonne scored four unanswered runs to trail by two. Webster's grand slam in the bottom half of the sixth helped increase their lead by seven (11-4). Fontbonne wasn't done as they crossed home plate three more times for a Gorlok 11-7 advantage. Webster scored two more unearned runs before game's end for a final score of 14-7.
Against Webster, the Griffins recorded 13 hits with a double by Alex Roedner and a triple by Zach Carel. Carel brought in three RBIs on two hits. Brett Freund went 3-for-4 on the day, scoring twice. Designated hitter Matt Wallis scored twice and brought in two runs on three hits on five at-bats. The Griffins committed four errors in the game but turned two double plays.
The Griffins' second game only began at 9:15pm against the Spalding University Golden Eagles. Spalding recorded the win with a 9-0 shutout which included 11 strikeouts. Roedner hit two on three attempts with Alex Hill hitting two of four at-bats.
Freund was the only Griffin garnishing SLIAC All-Tournament Team honors.
The Griffins ended their season 23-19, their best record in the last five years. Graduating Griffins include shortstop Rob Berger, first baseman Roedner, infielders Andy Knipmeyer and Nick Platipodis, catcher Freund, pitchers Jacob Becker, Dustin Graves and Cory Royer.
