Jackson, Miss. - Baseball was scheduled to open their 2015 season in Memphis at Rhodes College when ice sent all teams to Jackson Miss. instead. Millsaps College hosted the weekend's events at their home field and at Smith-Wills Stadium, where the Griffins played all three contests.
To start the season, Fontbonne fell to Southwestern University 5-2 Friday morning. The Griffins committed four errors in the game with Southwestern turning three mistakes. Tanner Carter got the first 2015 start for Fontbonne, striking out three batters in five innings of work. Freshman Keaton Wall pitched the final three innings allowing zero hits. Jacob Wilson was the only Griffin to hit past first, his only hit a double on three at-bats.
That same evening, the Griffins' start time against Rhodes College was pushed from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Ultimately Fontbonne suffered the 8-3 loss that ended near 1 a.m. Saturday morning. Rhodes held a 5-0 lead after three innings but Fontbonne scored three in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to two runs. Scoreless fifth and sixth innings were preceded by three Rhodes' runs in the seventh and eighth. Cale Laughlin suffered the loss for Fontbonne while striking out five batters in four innings. Vincent Santarsiero relieved Laughlin in the fourth with Devon Tolan pitching the final two innings. Tolan struck out four batters during his short stint on the mound. Zach Carel and Ben Greenway each recorded two RBI's in the loss.
Saturday night the Griffins took on neighbor Washington University. The Bears started with a 5-0 lead but the Griffins tied the game in the fifth, only for both teams to wait out a 50-minute rain delay. Ultimately the game was postponed.
Fontbonne is scheduled to host Marian University and Millikin University this weekend, pending any weather delays.
