The Fontbonne University baseball has opened their annual Spring Break trip to Florida by winning their first three games. The Griffins defeated St. Joseph's College (ME) 8-7, SUNY-Canton 11-0 and Stockton University (3-2). Fontbonne is now 3-2 on the season.
In their first game in Florida, the Griffins scored four runs in the final three innings for a 8-7 comeback victory. Trailing 7-4, Fontbonne scored two in the top of the 7th and two in the top of the 8th to take the lead. The Griffins' bullpen held Saint Joseph's scoreless over the final three innings.
At the dish, junior Ben Greenway went 4-5 with three RBI's while senior Matt Wallis drove in two runs. On the mound, freshman Keaton Wall pitched two-plus scoreless innings in relief to pick up his first career collegiate victory. Junior Vince Santarsiero retired the only batter he faced to earn his first save of the season.
In their second game of the trip, Fontbonne received a dominating pitching performance from junior Cale Laughlin as he went eigth scoreless innings with 10 strikeouts to pick up the win. Fontbonne took advantage of 10 walks and four errors to cruise to a 10-0 victory over SUNY-Canton. Junior Jacob Wilson went 2-3 from the dish with three RBI's and a home run. Junior Zach Carel drove in two runs and scored two runs in the blowout.
In their third game, Fontbonne defeated Stockton University 3-2. Patrick Shuff notched a walk-off double to secure Fontbonne's 3-0 start to spring break. Santarsiero three four innings in relief with no hits and three strikeouts. Tanner Carter went 3-4 at the plate with two doubles and two runs scored.
Fontbonne will return to the diamond tomorrow when they play Wheaton College at 8 am central time.
