Eureka, Ill. - Pitcher Tanner Carter led the Griffins to a 3-0 shutout to open St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference West Divisional play. Carter struck out eight batters in seven innings of work with just four hits allowed. The Griffins posted all three runs in the fifth inning.
In the contest immediately following, both teams crossed the plate once in the first inning with Fontbonne going up 3-1 after three. Eureka put three runs on the scoreboard in the fourth and one in the fifth as the Griffins trailed 3-5. The Griffins scored six runs in the next three innings for a 9-5 lead before Eureka tried to win in the bottom of the ninth, but fell short scoring two runs. Vincent Santarsiero got the win, coming in relief and pitching 4.2 innings with seven strikeouts.
On Sunday, Fontbonne rounded out the three-game sweep with a 5-2 win. All five runs were scored in the seventh inning while Eureka scored their two runs in the ninth. Cale Laughlin pitched eight innings for the win.
The Griffins travel across Wydown for a showdown with the Washington University Bears Wednedsy, March 25th at 3pm.
