Mount Pleasant, Iowa - Fontbonne baseball split with SLIAC divisional opponent Iowa Wesleyan College Saturday. The Griffins defeated the Tigers in game one 7-3 but lost 14-3 in the nightcap. Fontbonne is 17-16 overall and 12-6 in SLIAC play.
Steven Belovich's solo home run in the first got the Griffins in a groove. The Griffins scored three runs in the first two innings and led 3-0 after four. Iowa Wesleyan pulled within one run after the fifth inning on a two-run home run. Patrick Shuff answered for Fontbonne with his own two-run homer in the top half of the sixth while the Tigers were able to cross home once in their bottom half. Long-balls were finished as Tanner Carter hit the final home run of the game, his second of the year. Fontbonne ended with five runs on their three over-the-fence hits of the game. Cale Laughlin recorded his fifth win of the year.
Iowa Wesleyan retaliated in game two by scoring seven runs off Griffin starting pitcher Vince Santarsiero who suffered the loss. The Tigers led 8-0 before the Griffin got on the scoreboard with three runs before Iowa Wesleyan closed out the game scoring six more runs. Belovich and Shuff each doubled with Ethan Boyer recording a sac fly.
Fontbonne finishes the series with Iowa Wesleyan tomorrow at noon and plays across the street at Washington U. Tuesday before hosting their final game of the season. The Griffins will host Webster on Friday, May 1 at 7pm.
