Iowa Wesleyan
St. Louis, Mo. - Fontbonne baseball fell in both games to Iowa Wesleyan today to end their 2016 season with a 15-25 overall record and 8-14 conference record. The Griffins go out setting a new mark in the record book. The team threw 309 strikeouts, besting the old 1998 record of 289 strikeouts in a season. Leading the team was junior Vince Santarsiero with 66 while freshman Austin Earnest was right on his heels with 63 strikeouts. Game one
Iowa Wesleyan (IW) led 5-0 before Fontbonne plated two runs in the fifth. Relief pitcher Joey Clemente struck out the side in order in the sixth for the Griffins. In the seventh with two outs, IW singled to right field, but senior Zach Carel threw a laser home to save a run for the final out. Fontbonne tried to make a comeback in the ninth. With one out, Ethan Boyer and Sean Wallace both doubled to score a run. With two outs, Ryan Schocker singled to score Wallace but the Griffins stranded one at second as they fell 5-4.
Clemente struck out five in 2.1 innings of work. Earnest suffered his fourth loss of the season while striking out four batters. The freshman finished his inaugural year 5-4 on the mound.
Game two
The Griffins paid homage to their seniors, getting everyone some action while allowing fans to show their appreciation by subbing them out in the ninth inning.
Ryan Kasting hit his first varsity double tonight, trying to score Greenway from first. Greenway had singled which scored Boyer for the first run of the latter contest. The Griffins wouldn't score again until the ninth inning. Iowa Wesleyan plated 10 runs on nine hits and two errors. Carel and Nick Rothweiler both finished their collegiate at-bats with a hit. Carel pinch hit in the ninth with a double to right center that hit the bottom of the fence.
This was Coach Good's largest senior class with 11 student-athletes not returning to the roster next season and we wish them the best of luck in the future: Zach Carel, Tanner Carter, Connor Hanley, Ryan Kasting, Anders Nelson, Tom Nieman, Nick Rothweiler, Spencer Sander, Miguell Villegas, Sean Wallace and Jacob Wilson.
