Baseball suffers first-game defeat at Millsaps

Jackson, Miss. - Fontbonne University baseball has opened the 2017 with a loss after falling to Millsaps College 12-7 Friday night.
Last year's SLIAC Newcomer of the Year, Austin Earnest, earned the start for Fontbonne. Earnest allowed seven runs over four innings of work with three strikeouts. Senior Joey Clemente and freshman Luke Summers came went in in relief for the Griffins.
The Griffins led 5-4 until the bottom half of the fifth inning when Millsaps scored seven runs to lead 12-4. Fontbonne tried to come back, scoring three runs in the sixth on a relief pitcher. Both teams were held scoreless in the remaining three innings.
Senior catcher Patrick Shuff hit a double while Ethan Boyer and Ben Greenway each recorded a sacrifice fly. Boyer and Michael Golich each tallied one steal in the loss. Greenway recorded three runs batted in off two hits in the three-hole. Boyer notched two RBI's but struck out twice as did designated hitter Jesse Schott.
Fontbonne will be LaGrange on the campus of Millsaps on Saturday at 3 p.m.
