Griffins still searching for first win of the season
Memphis, Tenn. - Fontbonne University baseball is still searching for their first win of the season after falling to Rhodes College today 11-5. The Griffins are now 0-3 on the season while Rhodes goes over .500 to 4-3 on the year.
Today Fontbonne switched up their lineup, sending Ethan Boyer (normally at short) to centerfield, which allowed Matt Tossick to play at shortstop. The Griffins also started first baseman Ryan Schocker, moving Ben Greenway to designated hitter.
Sophomore Brendan Beck got the start, but allowed six runs in two innings of work.
Fontbonne led 5-1 after the first inning and a half before Rhodes exploded with five runs in the bottom half of the second to take and maintain the lead. Nick Bosma tried to make Rhodes' final hit of the inning an in-the-park home run but was out after Boyer's pass to the infield was cutoff by Tossick as Shuff was able to eliminate yet another Lynx run across the plate. The Lynx then scored three runs in the fourth and two in the eighth.
Boyer doubled for two RBI's in the fourth inning, but Schocker led all Griffins with three RBI's. Schocker earned two hits on four at-bats
Right-handed junior pitcher Cole Lankford stepped up for the Griffins and struck out six Lynx from the mound over four innings, despite allowing a two-run home run in the fourth inning.
Fontbonne's season opener is Friday, February 24th at 3 p.m. when they host Wisconsin-Platteville. The Griffins will then face Buena Vista in one game Saturday and again on Sunday.
