Rolla, Mo. - Fontbonne baseball trailed 4-2 and recorded a lone run in the fifth inning before being shutout in the final four innings to suffer a 9-3 loss at NCAA Division II opponent Missouri S&T. The Griffins are now 11-18 on the year.
First baseman Ryan Schocker had a hot day at the plate, going four-for-four and scoring the first Griffin run in the second inning when Logan Mueth doubled to right field.
Matt Tossick hit a sacrifice fly to right which scored senior Patrick Shuff. The Griffins scored their final run on an error in the fifth.
Missouri S&T stole four bases on the Griffins who cycled through their pitchers to gain some more experience on the mound. Freshman Luke Summers got the start, striking out two of his four batters faced in the first inning. Fellow freshman Jordan Throgmortan also struck out two in only an inning of work, as he faced six batters in the ninth and allowed two runs. Levi Earnest took the loss after he took the mound in the second inning with a 2-1 lead and gave up two runs on two hits. Drew Tayon, Tyler Scott and Cole Lankford also pitched.
The Griffins travel to Iowa Wesleyan University this weekend for a critical three-game divisional series against the Tigers with a single game Saturday and doubleheader Sunday. Each day's contests begin at 1 p.m.
