Griffins Drop Final Two Games Against No. 25 Webster

The two teams finished game one from yesterday this evening. Prior to tonight's first pitch, the Gorloks were on top 7-0 in the sixth inning. They tacked on two more runs in the seventh for the nine-run win.
Fontbonne (13-14; 5-5 SLIAC), finished with six hits but committed five errors overall. Individually, Michael Golich led with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate. Luke Summers, meanwhile, brought home the lone RBI.
On the bump, John Hughes, who was yesterday's starter, was dealt the loss after going 2.1 innings and allowing six runs (three earned).
Webster (19-7; 9-2 SLIAC), scattered seven hits and they were led by Kyler Kent going 3-for-3 with an RBI. Leadoff hitter Mike Wick, meanwhile, posted a hit and a team-high two RBI. On the mound, C.J. Lee got the victory after striking out seven Griffins yesterday over 5.0 innings of work.
In the first, the Gorloks plated two runs on an error and a sacrifice-fly which gave them the early lead. In the second, the team added four runs on four hits, highlighted by Kent's RBI double to right.
After adding another run in the fifth, the team led 7-0 heading into this evening. In the sixth, Ben Swords walked and moved up a base on a wild pitch. He later stole third and scored on a wild throw in an attempt to catch him stealing.
The offense kept rolling from there in the seventh. After a walk to Wardlaw, Wick stepped in and ripped a 2-run shot to right and that extended the lead out to 10-0. The Griffins got an RBI in the bottom of the inning but reliever Andrew Padilla closed the door on the Griffins for the win.

In the nightcap, the Griffins totaled eight hits but had its struggles defensively with five more errors. At the plate, Golich went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a game-high three RBI. He's now reached safely in his last 17 and extended his hitting streak out to eight.
On the mound, Levi Earnest took the loss after he went 1.1 innings and allowed four runs (one earned).
The Gorloks were led by Swords' performance at the dish as he went 3-for-5 with a run scored and two RBI. Joe Swanson contributed two RBI as well, while Ben Dinter tied Golich with three RBI.
Starter Jake Anderson was chased away after 3.0 innings of work. However, Austin Beccune came in out of the pen and tossed 6.0 innings of six hit ball and struck out two for his second win on the season.
In the second, after a leadoff single, Swanson doubled to right-center, allowing Strohm to race around and touch home for the 1-0 lead. From there, the Gorloks added three more runs for the 4-0 advantage.
They plated two more runs in the third, though the Griffins answered in the home half. Matt Tossick and Jonathan Hoevelmann worked consecutive walks.
Golich brought Tossick home with a rope of a double to left-center. After an RBI sacrifice-fly from Gus Purschke, the Griffins now trailed 6-2. Two batters later, Michael Puckett, Jr., hit a single to right and Golich scored to put the scoreboard at 6-3.
In the fourth, Nick Kenny led off with a walk. After a sacrifice-bunt from Deiydon Rushing, Tossick was hit-by-pitch. Hoevelmann followed with a single and now the bases were loaded for Golich.
The leadoff hitter came through with a single up the middle, scoring Kenny and Tossick, putting the team within one.
That'd be as close as they'd get with Webster scoring three more in the fifth and another in the seventh for the five-run win.
The Griffins will now hit the road this Wednesday as they'll square off against No. 15-ranked Spalding (22-5; 9-1 SLIAC). First-pitch is set for 2 p.m.
