Six Griffins Honored By SLIAC, Summers Earns Pitcher Of The Year For Second Straight Season
ST. LOUIS, Mo.—The St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference released the 2019 All-Conference Teams today and the Griffins came away with six honorees.
ST. LOUIS, Mo.—The St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference released the 2019 All-Conference Teams today and the Griffins came away with six honorees.
Luke Summers was named Pitcher of the Year for the second straight season and was named to the First Team. He was joined by Jonathan Hoevelmann as an infielder and Braeden Dobbs as a designated hitter.
Michael Puckett, Jr., earned Second Team honors, while Jackson Penrod was named to the Third Team. Tyler Grimes, meanwhile, earned All-Sportsmanship honors.
Summers, a St. Louis, Mo., native, becomes the first player in SLIAC history to win the award in consecutive seasons. He had a career-year on the bump where he went 11-2, totaling eight complete games, 94.0 innings pitched, 127 strikeouts, and a 0.67 ERA, all of which are new career-highs. Also, in his eight conference starts, Summers struck out 72 batters in his 58.0 innings of work, allowed just five earned runs, and had an ERA of 0.78.
He set the single-season record in wins, while becoming the all-time leader in victories (22) and strikeouts (250). Currently, he ranks first in Division III in both ERA and strikeouts.
After batting .238 last season, Hoevelmann had a bounce back season and earned SLIAC honors for the second time in his career. This year, the senior infielder set new career-highs in average (.377), on-base percentage (.433), slugging percentage (.528), hits (60), runs scored (41), doubles (13), home runs (three), RBI (24), and stolen bases (34).
In conference play, Hoevelmann batted .341, hitting 10 doubles, three homers, and bringing home 19 RBI.
He set the single-season record in stolen bases at Fontbonne and is the all-time leader with 85 in his career. Over the last four years, Hoevelmann finishes out his tenure at Fontbonne with a .320 average, totaling 145 hits, 105 runs scored, 21 doubles, four triples, five homers, and 60 RBI.
Dobbs, a Jackson, Mo., native, also had a career-year at the plate. The sophomore batted .368, totaling 49 hits, 32 runs scored, 11 doubles, one homer, and 29 RBI. In 22 conference games, Dobbs batted a team-high .378 and brought home 12 RBI.
Puckett, Jr., is named to the All-Conference Team for the first time in his career. He ended his senior season with a .299 average, totaling 32 hits, a career-high 25 runs scored, eight doubles, seven homers, and 33 RBI. In conference play, Puckett, Jr., dominated with a .303 average, seven homers, and 27 RBI.
He finishes out his Fontbonne career with a .292 average, totaling 69 hits, 42 runs scored, 12 homers, and 62 RBI.
Penrod, an O'Fallon, Ill., native, also is named to the All-Conference Team for the first time. He had new career-highs in average (.344), on-base percentage (.436), runs scored (26), and RBI (28). In SLIAC play, Penrod batted .357, to go along with his 25 hits, one homer and 11 RBI.
Grimes earns All-Sportsmanship honors for the first time in his career. Grimes, a senior, concluded the 2019 campaign with a career-high .308 average, totaling 20 hits, 18 runs scored, three doubles, and 15 RBI. He finishes his career with a .293 average.
