Griffins Split Against Nebraska Wesleyan

Imperial , MO. — The Griffins split home doubleheader with Nebraska Wesleyan.

The Griffins Split their Double Header with Nebraska Wesleyan this Sunday at windsor High School.

The Basics

Game one - Fontbonne 5 , Nebraska Wesleyan 6

Game two - Fontbonne 7 , Nebraska Wesleyan 6

Location - Imperial, MO

Venue - Windsor High School 

Records - FBU (4-3) , Nebraska Wesleyan (2-1-1)

How it happened:

Game One

After falling behind two to nothing in the top of the first, the Griffins were able to answer in the bottom half when Junior Braeden Dobbs singled home Senior Gus Purschke.  The Griffins would later take the lead when Junior Lane Smith and Dobbs scored on a Junior Daniel Youngblood groundout.  Finding themselves behind six to three in the third, the Griffins got an RBI single from Sophomore Joey Casey.  The comeback fell just short, after Junior Brandon Hinson scored the Griffins' fifth run on a throwing error in the sixth.

Fontbonne Notables

• Smith had two hits.
• Dobbs, Youngblood, and Casey each had an RBI.
• Both Purschke and Hinson had a stolen base.

Game Two

In game two, the Griffins were able to get a lead when Purschke scored on a third inning error.  The Griffins added to their lead in the fifth with a Junior Tyler Chambliss solo home run, a Smith RBI double, and a Sophomore Matt Manint sac fly.  With a four to one lead in the bottom of the fourth, the Griffins added some insurance when a Hinson bunt single scored Junior Houston Himes, and later Casey scored on a Purschke groundout.  Following some unlucky bounces in the top of the ninth, the Griffins were able to load the bases in the bottom of the ninth, before a fielding error allowed the game-winning run to score.

Fontbonne Notables

• Purschke went two for five with a double, an RBI, and a stolen base.
• Chambliss hit a solo home run.
• Senior Lance Chapman went two for three.
• On the mound Senior Alex Phillips and Junior Jake Jump combined for eleven strikeouts over seven innings.
• Senior Mike Jacobson got the win in relief.
