Fontbonne Baseball Drops First Two Against No. 4 Webster
SAUGET, Ill.—The Fontbonne University baseball team squared off against No. 4 Webster on Sunday to begin its four-game set and it was the Gorloks taking the first two from the Griffins.

SAUGET, Ill.—The Fontbonne University baseball team squared off against No. 4 Webster on Sunday to begin its four-game set and it was the Gorloks taking the first two from the Griffins.

How It Happened
It was a matchup of two of the top pitchers in NCAA Division III and SLIAC history between Luke Summers and Webster's Matt Mulhearn.
In the bottom of the third, the Gorloks struck first on an RBI ground out from R.J. LaRocco giving them a 1-0 lead.
Webster added another run in the fifth and a solo shot from Kyler Kent to start off the sixth extended its advantage out to 3-0. In the bottom of the seventh, the Gorloks broke the game open scoring five runs on two hits extending its advantage out to 8-0.
Fontbonne got on the board in the ninth on Luke Meixner's RBI single scoring Braeden Dobbs but the Gorloks went on to record the final out on the ensuing batter for the seven-run win.
Fontbonne Leaders
- Luke Summers went 6.0 innings, allowing two hits and two earned runs while sitting down seven.
- Fontbonne pitchers Summers, Jake Jump, and Mike Jacobson combined to hold Webster to four hits which ties its season-low since March. 30th against Westminster.
- Dobbs went 2-for-4 with a run scored as he's reached safely in his last nine.
- Colby Shivers, Tyler Chambliss, Meixner, Thomas Purschke, and Lane Smith added the other hits.

How It Happened
In the top of the second, Thomas Purschke led off with a single. Three batters later, Trey Kueper came through with a two out RBI double giving Fontbonne a 1-0 lead. Lane Smith followed with an RBI single of his own to make it a 2-0 game.
Webster trimmed the deficit down to 2-1 in the fourth. Then, in the bottom of the seventh, the Gorloks scored eight runs on six hits and were able to go on for the 9-2 win.
Fontbonne Leaders
- Trey Kueper went 2-for-4 with a run scored and one RBI.
- Lane Smith added a hit and an RBI.
- Daniel Youngblood, Thomas Purschke, Carter Lee, and Grant Staffen had one hit each.
- Dobbs walked once to reach base safely in his last 10.
- Ryan Howell took the tough loss falling to 4-3 after tossing 6.1 innings, allowing six runs, and striking out three.
