Fontbonne Baseball Drops First Two Against Spalding

ST. LOUIS, Mo.—The Fontbonne University baseball team dropped the first two games against Spalding falling 10-5 in game one and 14-4 (7 inn.) in game two.

How It Happened

The Golden Eagles opened with a 4-0 lead on four hits in the top of the first. They added another run in the fourth but Fontbonne got one back in the bottom half. Braeden Dobbs reached base on a one out single. Two batters later, the Griffins got on the board on Tyler Chambliss' RBI single to left.

After Spalding plated a run in the fifth to make it a 6-1 game, the Griffins cut the lead in half with Daniel Youngblood hitting his eighth homer on the year to center trimming the deficit down to 6-3.

Heading into the bottom of the eighth, the Golden Eagles led 7-3. Thomas Purschke led off with a single and he was able to trot home on Ty Kueper's two run shot down the right field line making it an 8-5 game.

Spalding, though went on to score three runs on three hits in the ninth getting two doubles and a triple en route to the 10-5 win.

Fontbonne Leaders

• Kueper and Youngblood each led with two RBI.
• Purschke finished with two hits.
• Colby Shivers, Dobbs, Chambliss, Matt Manint, and Lane Smith added one hit apiece.
• Luke Summers was dealt the loss going 7.0 innings and striking out eight.

Spalding 14, Fontbonne 4 (7 inn.)

How It Happened

The Golden Eagles grabbed a 3-0 lead in the third on four hits with Mitchell Langley and Evan Trentman (two) tallying an RBI.

Spalding went on to score two in the fourth, four in the sixth, and five more in the seventh to lead by 14. Fontbonne plated four runs in the seventh highlighted by Chambliss' bases clearing double but the Golden Eagles secured the final out for the mercy-rule win.

Fontbonne Leaders

• Chambliss tied his career-high with three RBI.
• Purschke had his second straight two hit game going 2-for-3 with a run scored.
• Smith, Trey Kueper, Carter Lee, and Eric Creech had one hit each.
• Ryan Howell fell to 5-4 on the year going 5.1 innings and striking out two.
