CLAYTON, Mo.—After dropping game three against Spalding, the Fontbonne University baseball team got a complete game gem from Derek Morganthaler to secure the 6-2 win in the series finale.
Gm3 Final:
Spalding 7, Fontbonne 2
How It Happened
The Golden Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the first getting RBI singles from Eric Meyer and Michael Speck. They added another run in the third but Fontbonne got on the board in the bottom half on Tyler Chambliss' RBI on a fielder's choice.
Spalding's offense kept rolling scoring two in the fourth and two in the sixth to lead 7-1. Fontbonne got one of those runs back in the sixth on Thomas Purschke's RBI single that scored Daniel Youngblood but the comeback was not to be with Spalding escaping the bases loaded threat in the bottom of the seventh from the Griffins for the series win.
Fontbonne Leaders
- Grant Staffen led at the plate going 2-for-3 with a run scored.
- Youngblood, Braeden Dobbs, Ty Kueper, Purschke, and Carter Lee had one hit each.
- Nick Glaser fell to 3-4 on the year going 5.0 innings, allowing two earned runs and sitting down three.
Gm4 Final:
Fontbonne 6, Spalding 2
How It Happened
It was the Griffins this time around gaining the early advantage in the first with Purschke leading off with a single up the middle. Youngblood came up and sent a no-doubter over the left centerfield wall giving Fontbonne a 2-0 lead for his ninth homer on the season.
Fontbonne tacked on two more in the sixth on Carter Lee sacrifice fly and Kameron Brooks scoring on a wild pitch. In the seventh, Youngblood was hit-by-pitch and he easily scored on Dobbs triple to right field. Dobbs went on to score on a wild pitch later in the inning extending the lead out to 6-0.
That was more than enough for Morganthaler who held the Golden Eagles offense in check pitching his first career complete game for the four-run win.
Fontbonne Leaders
- Morganthaler was dominant all game allowing just two runs on seven hits and striking out four for his team-high seventh win on season.
- The 1-2-3 hitters of Purschke, Youngblood, and Dobbs combined to go 6-for-10 with four runs scored and three RBI.
- Kameron Brooks added two hits and a run scored.
