MARYVILLE, Tenn. - The Fontbonne University baseball team had their last ever opening day as they took on Maryville University from Tennessee in a two-game series at Scotland Yard Stadium. The Griffins drop to 0-2 on the season.
Maryville swept the Griffins, with a 15-1 score in seven innings on game one and a 9-1 score on game two in nine innings.
On game one, Derek Morganthaler took the loss on the mound. He pitched 2.0 innings and struck out one while allowing nine hits and nine runs. Ben Swift pitched 4.0 innings and struck out three while allowing five hits and six runs. Gavin Lyday and Kameren Brooks each had one hit. Bryce McKinnon scored one run and Nathan Pruneau had one RBI.
On game two, Vonner Panek was credited with the loss on the mound. He pitched 1.0 inning and allowed four hits and six runs. Camden Coleman pitched 6.0 innings and struck out five while allowing eight hits and three runs. TJ Schwartz pitched 1.0 inning and struck out one. McKinnon, Zapher Lea and Pruneau each recorded one hit. Davin Smith scored one run and Pruneau had one RBI.
The Griffins return to action at home for two games this weekend. They face Knox on Saturday at 12 p.m. and Grinnell on Sunday at 3 p.m.
