Sprint Football Beats Walsh on Homecoming
ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Fontbonne University sprint football team kicked off Homecoming weekend with a victory against Walsh University, 12-6. The Griffins improve to 2-1 on the season.
"First off, congrats to Walsh on a great football game," commented Head Coach Austin Bortle. "They are a tough hardnosed team that battled for sixty minutes."
"I am incredibly proud of the determination our football team showed today. Throughout the adversity of the game, they kept a positive mentality on our sideline. These young men continue to find ways to win football games and I am excited to see how we can improve over the next two weeks."
By the Numbers
Fontbonne had seven first downs.
The Griffins totaled 125 yards of offense, including 187 through the air.
Defensively, the Griffins held Walsh to 214 total yards.
Temaj Taylor 7-of-19 187 yards and one touchdown.
KJ Burns had three catches for 144 yards and one touchdown.
Donte Lewis had one 71 yards interception and one touchdown.
Avion Bass had 14 tackles.
Clayton Arrowood had 11 tackles, while Clayton Arrowood had 10.
How it Happened
Both teams remained scoreless in the first half.
In the third quarter, Walsh opened scoring to take the 6-0 lead against Fontbonne.
Donte Lewis made a 71-yard interception return for Fontbonne to tie the game.
KJ Burns caught a 73-yard pass from Temaj Taylor to extend the Griffins lead to 12-6.
Junior Pisoni's kick was unsuccessful in both plays.
