Griffins drop another road contest
Fulton, Mo. - The Griffins suffered a crucial loss tonight to Westminster College, and are now 8-12 overall and 6-7 in SLIAC play. Westminster is also 8-12 overall, but improve to 8-5 in conference.
Fontbonne's rough start called for an early timeout as Westminster led 9-0 until Richard Dorhauer nailed a jumper after Coach Thornhill game the team an earful. Trailing 5-14, Fontbonne scored seven straight points, five from Kody Ettinger to only lag by two. Westminster answered in the middle of the half with seven points in a row to lead by eight with eight minutes to play in the first half. The Griffins crawled back, with Kris McCann scoring six of Fontbonne's eight points on an 8-2 run to tie the game 25-25. Westminster ended first-half play with a three-point 32-29 advantage.
The Griffins were only down two points with over 14 minutes to go when the Blue Jays sparked a 9-0 run and hung on for the 75-61 win.
Leading Fontbonne in scoring were Tyler Williams and Jared Greenlee with 12 points. Williams recorded five rebounds and three steals as well with all of his scoring occurring in the second half. Greenlee drained six of 10 attempts and added six rebounds to his stats. Freshman Kris McCann totaled 11 points with Ettinger marking 10.
Fontbonne hosts Big Bend rival Webster University Saturday, February 6th at 3 p.m. Eight of the ten teams in the SLIAC are still fighting for tournament play.
