Saints down Griffins in season opener

St. Louis, Mo. - Fontbonne University men's basketball opened their season at Maryville University tonight, just 20 minutes down Interstate 64. The Griffins took a 15-13 lead that was quickly eliminated as the Saints went on a 12-0 run and Fontbonne found themselves at the end of an 86-56 losing battle. Maryville is now 1-4 on the year.
Freshman forward Josh Calloni came in off the bench and quickly put a dent in the hosts, forcing two over-the-back calls against the Saints.
Sophomore guard Kris McCann (pictured) led the Griffins with a career-high 20 points in 35 minutes. He drained four treys on nine attempts while adding four more field goals.
Senior Trey Watkins led the team with seven rebounds while fellow senior Orkan Bakis brought down six and sophomore James Wiggins six as well. Watkins and Dallas Haywood each assists four times with Dallas adding eight points and three steals as well.
Fontbonne is on the road next week, playing at Augustana College on Tuesday night before Thanksgiving break. The Griffins home-opener is on Saturday December 3 against MacMurray College.
