Webster downs Griffins in final men's basketball game
Webster handed Fontbonne men's basketball a 93-70 loss in the final game of the 2016-17 season.
St. Louis, Mo. - Webster University handed Fontbonne men's basketball their 22nd loss of the season with a 93-70 defeat Saturday afternoon. The Griffins finish their regular season 3-22 overall and 3-15 in conference action. Twenty-two losses is the most in the history of Fontbonne basketball, and the second 20+ loss season in the last six years.
With the Griffins trailing by just one basket (15-13), Webster closed out the first half on a 33-10 run to lead 48-23 at halftime. Second-half play was much closer with Fontbonne edging Webster 47-45. Overall, the Griffins attempted 74 field goals and out-rebounded the Gorloks 43-30. Webster, however, capitalized on Fontbonne's 19 turnovers by scoring 26 points.
Senior Jeff Smith finished his college career by achieving his first-ever double double as a two-year Griffin. He scored a team-high 14 points and accumulated 10 rebounds. Fellow senior Orkan Bakis finished with 11 points while junior forward Jack Lake tallied 10 points.
Fontbonne loses Bakis, Rio Justice Chandler, Dallas Haywood, Garrett McDowell, Smith and Trey Watkins to graduation.
