Griffins Offense Held To Season-Low 60 Points Against Westminster
FULTON, Mo.—The Fontbonne University men’s basketball team came into the outing against Westminster averaging over 80.0 points per game which was third-best in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC). The Blue Jays defense stood up against the challenge and held FBU to a season-low 60 points in the 79-60 win.
FULTON, Mo.—The Fontbonne University men's basketball team came into the outing against Westminster averaging over 80.0 points per game which was third-best in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC). The Blue Jays defense stood up against the challenge and held FBU to a season-low 60 points in the 79-60 win.
Fontbonne (2-10; 0-5 SLIAC), shot 41.0 percent from the floor and out-rebounded the Blue Jays (8-4; 4-1 SLIAC) 45-35, however, its 21 turnovers proved costly.
Luke DeLine led Fontbonne from the floor going 8-of-14 to finish with a team-high 19 points. Jared Woodcock had a strong game off the bench with 10 points and seven boards. Noah Coddington, meanwhile, notched seven points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
Westminster shot 42.0 percent from the floor and overcame its turnovers going 14-of-31 (45.2 percent) from beyond-the-arc.
Collin Caywood led all scorers on the night as he went 9-of-12 from 3-point land to conclude with 29 points. Carter Wands collected a double-double with 14 points and a game-high 10 assists, while Tanner Cochran added 14 points of his own.
In the first half, Coddington's bucket at the 15:24 mark narrowed the Blue Jays lead down to 11-10. Westminster went on to stretch its lead out to 21-13 over the next five minutes on Steven Brand's 3-pointer.
Back came the Griffins with an 8-0 run as Woodcock's 3-pointer, with 4:58 to go, tied the game at 21-21. The two teams went back-and-forth the rest of the final minutes but it was Westminster owning a 34-28 lead at the break.
The Griffins shot the ball well in the first half with its 46.2 field goal percentage, but they committed 12 turnovers compared to Westminster's three. DeLine led them with 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting.
At the 13:52 mark of the second half, Fontbonne cut the lead down to 47-43 on Coddington's lay-up. Westminster got its advantage back out to eight (53-45), however, another 8-2 run by FBU had them right with the Blue Jays at 55-53 on Tristan Baker's made jumper.
Fontbonne's offense, though went cold over the next five minutes as the Blue Jays rattled off an 18-0 run to take a commanding 73-53 lead. That proved to be more than enough for them to go on for the 19-point win.
FBU returns home on Saturday as they'll take on MacMurray. Tip-off is slated for 3 p.m.
