The Fontbonne University men's soccer won its 2012 home opener last night defeating Illinois College 2-1. The Griffins improved to 2-0-1 on the season.
Fontbonne opened the scoring in the 17th minute as junior Josh Schulz scored his second goal of the season off a pass from junior Taylor Pratte. The assist was Pratte's first of the season. The Griffins continued to dominate play throughout the first half but were unable to add to the scoreline. Fontbonne outshot Illinois College 11-0 in the first half.
In the second half, sophomore Tim Menzel scored his first goal of the season off a free kick to increase the Griffins lead to 2-0 in the 56th minute. Senior Charlie Chafin recorded the assist on Menzel's goal. Illinois College however battled back and scored its lone tally of the game just over a minute after Menzel's goal. Fontbonne goalkeeper Ryan Essenpreiss made a key save late in the game to preserve the victory for the Griffins.
For the game, Fontbonne outshot Illinois College 20-5 and held a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Fontbonne will return to the pitch on Saturday at 1 pm at Centene Stadium against University of the Ozarks.
