The Fontbonne University men's soccer team remains undefeated at home after a tight 1-0 win over Principia College last night. With the victory, the Griffins improved to 8-2-2 overall, 2-0 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) and 5-0 at home.
In a game that didn't have many scoring chances, Fontbonne took advantage of one of their few chances in the first half to grab a 1-0 lead. Junior Josh Schulz scored his team-leading seventh goal of the season in the 35th minute on an assist from junior Jimmy Timmerberg. The Griffins outshot Principia 5-3 in the first half and held a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks but carried that 1-0 lead into halftime.
In the second half, the game remained tight throughout with neither team able to get much going offensively. Principia outshot Fontbonne 6-2 in the second half and Fontbonne was able to record the only corner kick.
Griffin junior goalkeeper Ryan Essenpreis recorded three saves in the second half to record the shutout and victory. The shutout was the fourth on the season for Essesnpreiss.
