Fontbonne University junior forward Tim Menzel scored a pair of goals on Saturday to lead the Griffins to a 2-0 victory of Spalding University. Fontbonne improved to 10-3-2 overall and 4-1 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC).
Despite holding a 8-1 advantage in shots on the first half on Saturday, the Griffins didn't break into the scoring column until the 38th minute as Menzel drove a low shot past the diving Spalding keeper. Menzel extended the Griffins lead in the second half scoring in the 77th minute after junior Joe Tibbles made a nice run down the left flank. Tibbles earned assists on both of Menzel's goals.
Sophomore Joey Mirth picked up his second victory of the season in goal for the Griffins. He also posted his first career collegiate shutout making seven saves in the game.
Fontbonne will return to action on Wednesday night when they host defending SLIAC champion Westminster College at 6 pm.
