The Fontbonne University men's soccer team opened their 2013 season by splitting a pair of games in Texas this weekend. The Griffins fell to University of Dallas 3-2 but rebounded to beat Austin College 4-2. Fontbonne is 1-1 on the season.
On Saturday, Fontbonne squandered a 2-0 lead in the second half allowing Univ. of Dallas to score three unanswered goals. Seniors Josh Schulz and Zach Schuchardt scored for the Griffins while senior Joe Tibbles recorded the assist on Schuchardt's goal.
On Sunday, the Griffins fell behind early to Austin College but responded by scoring four unanswered goals to propelled them to a 4-2 victory. Schulz tallied his second goal of the season while seniors Wesley Laney, Zach Meyer and Justin Williams recorded their first goals of the season. Tibbles picked up his second assist of the season on Laney's goal, while freshman Ben Boyd recorded his first career collegiate point when he earned the assist on Williams' goal. Junior Joey Mirth earned his first win of the season in goal for the Griffins.
Fontbonne will return to the pitch on Thursday night when they host Lindenwood-Belleville University at 8 pm.
