The Fontbonne University men's soccer team won their fourth straight game and is in a three-way tie for first place in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) after defeating Greenville College last night 2-1. The Griffins improved to 12-6-1 overall and 7-1 in the SLIAC.
Fontbonne opened the scoring in the 25th minute when senior Zach Schucardt headed home a free kick delivered by senior Josh Schulz. For Schucardt is was his third goal of the season while Schulz earned his team-leading seventh assist of the season. The Griffins took a 1-0 advantage into halftime.
In the second half, Jacob Krisher scored for Greenville in the 60th minute to even the score at 1-1. With ovetime looming on a cold, wet evening, senior Zach Meyer provided the game winner in the 83rd minute on an assist from freshman Ben Boyd. For Meyer it was his 14th goal of the season which leads the SLIAC. He also leads the SLIAC with 30 points on 14 goals and 2 assists.
Fontbonne senior goalie Ryan Essenpreiss made a season-high 12 saves in picking up the win for the Griffins.
The Griffins will return to the pitch Saturday for their regular season finale as they host Blackburn College at 1 pm. The Griffins will honor 12 seniors prior to the start of the game.
