St. Louis, Mo. - Fontbonne men's soccer suffered a heartbreaking loss tonight in a hard fought match as they fell 1-0 in overtime to Simpson College.
On a corner kick seconds into overtime, Simpson scored on their third try directly in front of the goal. Fontbonne goalkeeper Joey Mirth saved the first attempt and a Griffin defender saved the second. It was the second team save of the night for Fontbonne as the first also came on a previous corner kick opportunity.
Simpson totaled 20 shots during the match as Fontbonne only got off six attempts. Mirth ended the night with seven saves.
Under 11 minutes into the game there were already 6 fouls committed. Coaches and players from both teams were upset with the officiating from the start. By the end of the game 35 fouls were committed along with two yellow cards from each team.
Fontbonne hopes to add a second win to their record this Sunday, September 21 as they host the University of Saint Mary (KS) at 1pm.
