St. Louis, Mo. - The Griffins fell to Wydown neighbor Washington University 3-1 tonight, dropping their season record to 3-10.
Washington U. found the back of the net early off a Griffin foul. Jack West took the free kick passing it to nearby teammate Noah Lieberman. Lieberman's rocket curved from the right side of the goal towards the left, directly to Shadi Awad who scored his first goal of the season.
The Griffins tied the game on a penalty shot by senior Phil Gangloff. After a Bears' defender mistake sent Griffin forward Alex Smith barreling after the ball, all alone towards the goal. Bears' goalkeeper Nick Tannenbaum sprinted toward the ball to intercept Smith's shot attempt, sliding dangerously at Smith. Tannenbaum was awarded a yellow card as the two collided just inside the top left edge of the box. Smith was shaken up on the play. The goal was Gangloff's second of the year.
Tied, 1-1 at halftime, the Bears controlled most of the offensive play during the second half as they finished with a 16-7 shot advantage on the night. West scored his fifth goal of the season on his own rebound after his first shot was blocked. Washington U. put the game out of reach for Fontbonne as Kevin Maedomari recorded his first goal of the year from an assist by Lieberman.
Fontbonne goalkeeper Joey Mirth made seven saves during the game, six in the second half.
Fontbonne returns to the pitch this Saturday, October 11th at 3pm as they host SLIAC opponent Iowa Wesleyan over Alumni Reunion weekend.
