St. Louis, Mo. - From, the very beginning, senior goalkeeper Joey Mirth was golden in goal for Fontbonne University men's soccer Wednesday night. The Griffins defeated the Greenville College Panthers 1-0 to remain unbeaten in conference play with their 6-0 record.
Mirth was surrounded by Panthers right in front of the goal line within the first minute of play, securing the ball on the ground in what Griffin fans thought would result in a goal for Greenville. Mirth would again make some very close-range saves in a cluster of players again late in the game, to keep the Griffins' 1-0 lead in-tact. Fontbonne players were so excited for their goalkeepers efforts, they picked him up mid-game in celebration. Mirth ended the game with seven saves.
Fellow senior Tim Menzel put the only goal on the scoreboard in the 19th minute of play. Menzel dribbled his way up the center of the field and shot through several defenders. The goal was Menzel's eighth of the season.
The Griffins outshot the Panthers 21-9 but Greenville held the corner kick advantage 8-5. Zero cards were issued, however a total of 28 fouls were distributed.
Fontbonne has now won four games in a row and hopes to continue their win streak Saturday when they travel to Spalding University in Louisville, Ky. for a 12:00 pm EST start time.
