St. Louis, Mo. - An exciting games for fans ended in a loss for the Fontbonne men's soccer as the Griffins succumed to Lake Forest College 5-3.
Lake Forest struck first scoring two goals in the first half. The Foresters possessed the ball for some time right from the start, after which Fontbonne then held possession for a while. Lake Forest posted a severe threat in the 15th minute, broken up by Fontbonne goalkeeper Tony Pitaro. Both teams had several close free kicks in the first half which resulted in wide shots. Lake Forest's first goal was scored on a right-side cross where Seton Trostle was waiting near the left post for the tap-in. The Forester's ended first-half scoring on a penalty kick after someone was tripped near the left side of the box.
Fontbonne came out strong in the second half when Ryan Curran scored from the middle of the box just 14 seconds after halftime. After Lake Forest netted their third goal of the game, freshman Griffin Matt Rapisardo was tripped on the left edge of the box, allowing sophomore Corey Schmidt to score on the penalty kick in the 59th minute. Schmidt was the start of a beautiful transition from near midfield to Rapisardo up the middle. Rapisardo connected with Alex Lamoreaux for his first goal of the season as Fontbonne tied Lake Forest 3-3 in the 78th minute. The Foresters wouldn't give up without a fight as they scored the game-winner two minutes later followed by a fifth goal in the 83rd minute.
Fontbonne falls to 1-4 on the season while Lake Forest advances to 4-0. The Griffins host Rhodes Saturday, Sept. 19th at 1pm.
