Fulton, Mo. - Fontbonne University men's soccer saw their season come to a close tonight after losing to Westminster College 5-0. The Griffins ended their 2015 season 9-11 overall and 6-3 in conference play.
Fontbonne got off to a good start with several free kicks in their offensive end early in the game. The Griffins were unable to convert those, allowing Westminster to threaten for the first goal. The Blue Jays scored the game-winner in the 24th minute on a free kick about 10 yards outside the box. The ball bent around Fontbonne's wall and slipped into the right bottom corner.
Westminster scored once more before the half was over on a header and followed with three goals in the second half.
Fontbonne goalkeeper Jordan Alberici made at least two point-blank saves, on his way to 14 saves in his final game as a sophomore. The Griffins earned just four shots on the night compared to Westminster's 32. The Blue Jays also held a 10-1 corner-kick advantage.
The Griffins lose seniors Devin Arand, Alex Platipodis and Nathan Spiess next season. Spiess and Platipodis earned SLIAC All-Tournament team accolades while Arand was named to the All-Sportsmanship team.
