ST. LOUIS, Mo.— Playing under the lights at home for the first time this year and having a loud fan base behind them, the Fontbonnne University men's soccer team sent the crowd home happy with a 1-0 win over Illinois College.
"I'm proud of the way the guys kept their heads," said head coach Donnie Alberty. "IC kind of took it to us a little bit at the start of the second half and we didn't respond as well as we could have. That's something we will have to work on and it took a pretty goal on a special service from Corey Schmidt with a clinical finish from David Keeven."
Fontbonne (2-1), was dominant throughout the game in the possession battle and eventually outshot the Blue Boys, 14-9. Keeven's goal was his second on the year, while Alex Phillips led the way with three shots. In net, Jordan Alberici came up with some key saves to collect the victory.
From the opening whistle, the Griffins offense took over and spent the majority of thehalf on IC's side of the field. The Griffins had its fair set of chances in the 22nd and 23rd minutes off shots from Phillips and Nick Nelson, but Blue Boys' net-minder, Ty Clearwater, kept the game scoreless.
It was a physical game throughout the first half, but on the stat sheet it was Fontbonne owning the shot totals with a favorability of 8-3 after 45:00 minutes of play.
The pace of the game picked up even more in the second half as did the physicality. However, in the 56th minute, Schmidt lifted the ball perfectly from midfield over the IC's defense. Keeven raced around them and tipped his shot over the leaping Clearwater into the back of the net, giving the Griffins a 1-0 advantage.
That was more than enough for Fontbonne with the defense holding strong and Alberici coming up with multiple saves, that allowed them to go on for the win.
The team will hit the road now this weekend for two games at Rhodes. On Saturday, they'll take on Hendrix at 2 p.m., followed by an outing against host Rhodes at 4 p.m. no Sunday.
