ST. LOUIS, Mo.—The Fontbonne University men's soccer team picked up a dominant 6-0 win over Eureka on Saturday to kick-off its St. Louis Intercollegiate Conference (SLIAC) schedule.
The Griffins (6-3-1; 1-0 SLIAC), played well from start-to-finish with a shot advantage of 59-1. The team had six different goal scorers with Blake Smugala, Greg Ferry, Marc Roellig, Andres Castro, Kevin Gregorc and Ian Schweiger all finding the back of the net.
In goal, Jordan Alberici and Alfonzo Sanchez-Seleme split time with Sanchez-Seleme making the lone save. Alberici, meanwhile, improved to 5-0 on the year.
In the first half, it was all Fontbonne from the opening whistle and they cashed in on its effort in the 14th minute. David Keeven crossed the ball over to Smugala and he buried in his chance to make it a 1-0 game.
Less than two minutes later, Alex Phillips saw his shot get saved by Daniel Johnson, however, Johnson couldn't corral the rebound and it went right to Ferry who kicked in the easy goal to give them a 2-0 lead.
The offensive outburst continued in the 17th minute with Roellig getting in on the action. The junior ripped his shot from just outside the box, and it went off a Red Devils defender and into the net, pushing the advantage to 3-0.
The team wasn't done there in the 25th minute as a loose ball found the foot of Castro and he buried his shot into the far post, his first on the year, to give the home team a 4-0 lead. FBU went on to add one more in the 32nd minute as Brendan Kopff kicked the ball into the box near midfield and Gregorc headed it in to make it 5-0 at the break.
It was more of the same story in the second half as the Griffins scored another goal in the 67th minute. Schweiger received a pass from Michael Flynn-Carr, and he cut past one defender scoring into the far post, putting the scoreboard at 6-0. It was all Fontbonne the rest of the way with them cruising to the shutout win.
The team will be back in action on Tuesday at home when they'll face rival Webster. Kick-off is set for 6 p.m.
